Tencent Secures Nvidia GPUs Through Japanese Partner Amid U.S. Export Limits
Tencent has circumvented U.S. export restrictions by accessing Nvidia's latest Blackwell GPUs through Datasection, a Japanese firm that pivoted from marketing solutions to AI infrastructure. The arrangement, worth over $1.2 billion, grants Tencent a significant share of Datasection's initial 15,000-chip batch stationed in Japan—hardware China cannot directly import.
Datasection CEO Norihiko Ishihara highlights the explosive demand: "Less than half a year ago, 5,000 B200 chips sufficed for AI models. Now, 10,000 is the minimum." The deal underscores the scramble among Chinese tech giants to secure offshore GPU capacity as U.S. controls tighten, propelling niche cloud providers like Datasection into strategic roles.
